Music is transcendent (existing outside space and time) with the power to move people like nothing else. (I will eventually produce on the blog my Argument from Music for the existence of God.) Watch these videos of contemporary music afficionados listening to “Nights In White Satin” by the Moody Blues for the first time in their life; their reaction says it all. The music of the 60s and 70s is some of the most beautiful music ever created. It makes much of today’s music sound like a cacophony of noise. No pryotechnics, no dancing around on stage half-naked, no special effects, no autotune, no smashing guitars for effect. Just captivating beautiful music. Music originates with God and only beings created in the image of God are capable of such great beauty. As one person hearing this song for the first time says, “This is what the best of the best is.” Another commenter wrote, “I challenge ANY one or group today to come up with something as masterful as this!” Ever wonder why so many songs are about love? Christianity answers that question with resounding truth and transcendence. The first video is here. Other reactions to the song are here. Still more reaction is here. The performamce by itself is here. Lyrics to this love song are at the end.
Finally, here is truly beautiful music, composed by Ennio Morricone, one of the two greatest composers of my generation and sung by a world-class soprano.
Night in White Satin lyrics:
Nights in white satin, never reaching the end
Letters I’ve written, never meaning to send
Beauty I’d always missed with these eyes before
Just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore
[Chorus]
‘Cause I love you
Yes, I love you
Oh, how I love you, oh
[Verse 2]
Gazing at people, some hand in hand
Just what I’m going through, they can’t understand
Some try to tell me thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end
[Chorus]
And I love you
Yes, I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
[Flute Solo]
[Verse 3]
Nights in white satin, never reaching the end
Letters I’ve written, never meaning to send
Beauty I’ve always missed with these eyes before
Just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore
