Agnosticism is the view that the existence or nonexistence of God cannot be known with certainty. Professing ignorance, it neither asserts nor denies.
James Anderson in Understanding Christian Apologetics, wisely observes, “One might think that agnosticism (withholding judgment on theological matters) is a religiously neutral position, but a moment’s reflection shows that to be mistaken. Agnosticism is a de facto denial of the clarity and ubiquity of God’s self-revelation (see the later discussion of natural revelation). Similar considerations apply to religious pluralism, which purports to equally accommodate multiple religious traditions or worldviews.”
Many – including even some Christians – falsely believe that agnosticism is a view that is “on the fence” with respect to Jesus Christ. That is deluded. Jesus said in Matthew 12:30 and Luke 11:23, “Whoever is not with me is against me.” It emphasizes that there is no neutral position regarding Jesus; one must willfully choose to support and follow him. Everyone else opposes him. Those who claim to be agnostic and thus undecided and neutral, are dangerously and foolishly wrong. Everyone without exception who is not with Jesus is already against him. When an agnostic claims that he “hasn’t made up his mind yet”, he is wrong. Until and unless one chooses to follow Jesus, they are already against him.
There are no fence-sitters with respect to Jesus Christ.
