We often hear the phrase “Act of God” used to describe catastrophes, particularly by insurance companies. Sometimes it is used correctly such as with a destructive tornado. But in 1889 it was used to shield the rich and powerful from accountability and the consequences of their rash decisions and foolish actions that resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 people. There is a historical record here of how “How America’s Most Powerful Men Caused America’s Deadliest Flood” and were never held responsible. The 1889 Johnston Flood was a true disaster that was no “Act of God” despite the pronouncements by the courts of the day. There is an AI recontruction here of the Johnston Flood here to show what happened that terrible day on May 31, 1889.
One of the promises inherent in Christianity is the pledge by God to ultimately rectify every wrong. Every wrong will one day be set right with absolute, perfect divine justice. There is a day of reckoning coming. In this fallen world, we all-too-often see injustice prevail. Psalm 73 tells us not to fret when evil people escape justice in this fallen world. “But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God ; then I discerned their end.” The Psalms repeatedly exhort us not to fret because of people who are responsible for inflicting evil and seemingly get away with it. For a terrifying “Act of God” will one day exact retribution from all those outside the saving grace and sanctifying blood of Christ. That day will be a true “Act of God.” And it will be a terrifying day.
