Effective Apologetics is like combined arms. Combined arms are critical for success in combat because no single weapon can be decisive against a determined and adaptive enemy. Combined arms involves blending differing weapons with diverse capabilities in a simultaneous manner to prevail on the battlefield. It involves the combination of effects to gain synergy. So it is with apologetics. An effective apologist must be proficient in multiple areas and arguments.
However . . . there is no “magic bullet” argument that always works. Every person, situation and culture is different. A powerful apologist must be proficient in multiple areas. Remeber that some will not be convinced no matter how persuasive the evidence (Luke 16:31).
“The whole case for Christian theism does not rest on the design argument, but on the convergence of a host of arguments. If the kalam argument is reasonable, if the historicity of the New Testament can be established (especially the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus), and if other arguments for God are considered, then the cumulative effect of all the arguments goes into establishing the rationality of Christianity.”
— Scaling the Secular City: A Defense of Christianity by J. P. Moreland
Apologetics is not a discipline for only elite Christians. Nor is the practice of apologetics limited to formal debate. Apologetics is as practical as anything in the Christian life. Apologetics is as simple as knowing what we believe, why we believe it, and being able to communicate that to others in a humble, winsome, biblical manner. Apologetics is an essential part of the Christian life and experience.
Everyone is an apologist when they are born again – for either good or bad.
