In Romans 1, Paul warns of the consequences of rejecting truth. In Col 2:8, he warns of being taken captive by deceit. In 2 Thess 2:13-19 he warns of deception because people refuse to love the truth.
In our world with instant global communication technology, deceit spreads easily and rapidly. Those who form their understanding of reality (worldview) from social media will inevitably end up down the rabbit hole in Wonderland because lies profilerate in this fallen world. As an example, here is an article about online conspiracy theorists (whom the author refers to as “nutters”) who assert that the Artemis mission to the moon is a fake. Such people are in tbe same category as flat-earthers whom no amount of evidence will convince.
To reject transcendent truth is to embrace insanity. Tomorrow is Easter when Jesus spectacularly shattered death. No amount of evidence will convince some that he returned from the dead. Those who reject Jesus and his offer of forgiveness and eternal life are akin to the passengers on board Titanic who refused to board a lifeboat because they did not believe the truth articulated by the captain and crew that the ship was sinking. As I wrote in my book,
“In the early morning hours of April 15, 1912 Titanic sank after striking an iceberg, taking some 1,500 people to their deaths. While there was enough space in the lifeboats for 1178 people, only 706 were saved. Michael Averon records the results of the subsequent Senate investigation into the tragedy and writes that there was an “underestimated strength of those little wooden boats, and confidence in the overestimated strength of the Titanic.” A number of the early boats that were launched were not full to capacity because passengers believed Titanic could not sink and decided to stay onboard the warm ship rather than risk a rickety open lifeboat in the middle of the freezing Atlantic. Tragically many of the Titanic’s passengers could not face the reality of what was about to happen.”
John Lennox, professor of mathematics at Oxford and a powerful Christian apologist is famously reputed to have said “We all move towards the return of Christ at two ‘speeds’ – the speed of earth history and the speed with which we approach death.” Even if one thinks that the Return of Christ is a fantasy, their death is not. Death will inexorably come for them. And those who reject the reality of Truth incarnate will figuratively go down with their ship. At their last moment when it is too late – cold, hard reality will horrifyingly slap them in the face. But it will be too late.
