Christian Apologetics

Defending Christianity as both true and rational

"but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense [Greek is apologia] to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (1 Pet 3:15)

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” CS Lewis

Responding To Edward Babinski’s “The Resurrection of Jesus: Was there a missing Body?”

I was asked to respond to this article by Ewdard Babinski. In responding to anyone, I of course want to know something about the author. In Babinski’s case, the information is sparse, almost non-existent. He apparently claims to be an “independent researcher”, whatever that is. He also apparently claims to…

  1. Sorry but there is no question on the historicity of the person of Jesus Christ. Some skeptics deny that Jesus Christ ever existed and is merely a figment of the imagination. The peer-reviewed journal “Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus” destroys any sense of mythicism regarding Jesus. As one of the editors notes, “It (the journal) also has people of many different religious affiliations, there are members who identify as Jewish, evangelical Christian, mainline Christian, agnostic, and atheist. We disagree on just about everything when it comes to Jesus and the sources pertaining to him. However, what we all agree on is that (1) Jesus existed and (2) people who deny his existence are cranks or bad-historians.”

There is extrabiblical witness in the ancient writings of Josephus, Tacitus, Lucian, Serapion, Eusebius, Julius Africanus, and Phlegon of Tralles. There is no question regarding the historicity of Jesus Christ.

Note that a group including “Jewish, evangelical Christian, mainline Christian, agnostic, and atheist” disagree on just about everythng except: (1) Jesus existed and (2) people who deny his existence are cranks or bad-historians.

  5. The Maximal Data Argument for the Resurrection is the attempt by a small minority of conservative Christian apologists including Evan Minton to prove the resurrection of Jesus presupposing the historical reliability of the Gospels. This approach is no different than Mormon apologists presupposing the historical reliability of the Book of Mormon to prove the existence of the angel Moroni and his Golden Plates! It is completely irrational and based on the sophomoric assumption that a non-expert can spend enough time on the internet to know more than the collective wisdom of thousands of experts. These Christian apologists have great disdain for the consensus of experts who believe the Gospels are NOT eyewitness sources, but in their next paragraph will turn around and appeal to the same experts for their consensus opinion regarding the historicity of Jesus, the partial authenticity of the Testimonium Flavianum, and other issues. This approach to expert opinion is nothing more than cherry picking. Accept what you like, toss what you don’t. Belief based on such an irrational approach to evidence should be an embarrassment to every educated Christian.
