Given the state of public education, I suspect many young people have no idea who the Marquis de Sade is. (The word “sadism” derives from his name.) He was the first person in modern times to write openly about abortion and affirm it. As Davidson notes in Pagan America,
Sade’s La Philosophie dans le boudoir, a dramatic dialogue published in 1795, was chock full of his usual attacks on religion, Christian morality, procreation, and family ties, along with endorsements of atheism, abortion, sodomy, incest, lust, and cruelty. The book is so shockingly obscene and pornographic that two centuries after its first publication it had never been made available for sale in Britain, in any edition, and an English translation was not published in the United States until 1965.
As a 1980 medical journal observes, “Sade produced most of the arguments in favor of induced abortion which have been used since then to advocate for it.” [A. D. Farr, “The Marquis de Sade and Induced Abortion,” Journal of Medical Ethics 6, no. 1 (1980): 9, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1154775/?page=3%5D
Sade was far more honest than today’s advocates for abortion, recognizing it as murder, but with which he had no moral qualms. He also had no problem with infanticide.
Interesting that modern abortion advocates can credit the Marquis de Sade for their current arguments. And I suspect that while pro-abortion advocates will insist it is not murder but merely a “clinical removal of cells” — deep down, they instinctively do know that it’s murder, knowledge that they choose to willfully suppress.
The good news is that forgiveness and restoration is available for those who have aborted their child, through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. If we confess our sins, he [Christ] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Christianity alone, vanquished the common practices of abortion, infanticide and sex slavery in ancient Rome. As our culture abdicates from the Judeo-Christian worldview and reverts to paganism (where there is no truth and everything is permitted), those barbaric practices are resurfacing with a vengeance.
