Lucas Stamps authored an excellent editorial here entitled “Immortality without God.” As I pointed out in my book Memento Mori, Helping the Church Regain the Lost Art of Dying Well, some naively believe that life can be indefinitely prolonged with new technology. Stamps correctly points out that unending life in this fallen world would truly be hell-on-earth.

“But one wonders what Johnson and others like him would even hope to do with their auto-immortality. Who would want to live forever in a world of finite goods? Eternal life without being transfixed on the Source and Cause of all goodness would only lead to eternal boredom. Only the beatific vision of God makes immortality worthwhile. In other words, heaven is heaven because God is there.

Furthermore, never ending life in a fallen world would be a misery. To be immortally locked in our moral depravity is the very definition of hell. In Eden, when God sent the cherubim to guard the way to the tree of life, He was protecting humanity from such a hell on earth.“
