FYI that there is a new English Bible translation that is earning strong reviews – the Berean Standard Bible. The Berean Bible is a completely new English translation of the Holy Bible based on the best available manuscripts and sources. Each word is connected back to Greek or Hebrew to produce a transparent text that can be studied for its root meanings. Translation was from Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic Sources. Unlike most other translations, the BSB is freely available. The Berean Bible and Majority Bible texts were officially placed into the public domain as of April 30, 2023.
The translation process for the BSB- “The Berean Bible Translation Committee has employed an open process where translation tables are freely available, and all comments are welcomed and considered. Over the past five years, feedback has poured in from pastors, teachers, professors, and many more who volunteered in this process. Our approach was unique, as typically translations are closed to large committees and incur high costs.” Additional detail on the translation process is here.
The Berean Standard Bible lies somewhere near the middle of the range from “Word for Word” (Literal) Translations to “Thought for Thought” (Dynamic) Translations.
There are four tiers of translations:
- the Berean Standard Bible which is now available and falls just below the ESV for literalness
- the Berean Literal Bible which is a word-for-word translation that takes the reader to the core of the Greek and Hebrew meanings. Still under development, the first full draft is now online.
- the Berean Interlinear Bible which is a word for word, Greek / Hebrew word order rendering based on the most reliable sources. This text also contains complete parsing tags, as well as Strong’s numbers to for easy reference to Greek lexicons. The basis for the interlinear text is the Biblos Interlinear, developed over several years and now refined by the translation committee. The full version of the Berean Interlinear Bible is under construction, to include both the New and Old Testaments. The release date is uncertain as of now. The initial release will be in digital format. There are no current plans for a print version, but this possibility will be revisited at a later date.
- the Berean Annotated Bible which is the Annotated version of the Berean Standard Bible (BSB). The BAB includes over 50,000 points of emphasis. An early draft is online and is now in the stage of proofing, consistency checking, and public comment.
