Does the brain explain the mind? A neuroscientist argues “no” and that something else is going on. Dr. Michael Egnore, neurosurgeon with more than 7,000 operations, argues in a remarkable video here that his experience with the best modern neuroscience shatters materialism and supports the existence of the soul which enables reason and free-will. While he was raised an atheist, he began to experience phenomena in his neuroscience practice that devastated his materialistic worldview.
Materialism is a small box that a materialist tries to cram all reality into. The problem is that all reality will not fit into the materialist box. I appreciate Egnore’s response to “promissory materialism” (the theory that we simply don’t know enough yet, but ultimately will). His response? “I’ll give you my phone number; call me when when you have the answer. Of course, they never call.”
The best known NDE (near-death-experience) in medical history that Egnore chronicles is jaw-dropping. He identifies four common characteristics of NDEs: (1) end-of-life review, (2) out of body experience, (3) encountering dead people and not living people, and (4) are often life-changing.
